The course is aimed at professional drivers to ensure they understand their responsibilities to comply with legislation in the UK and EU.

Course Content

Welcome and Introduction

Ice breaking, introduction and objectives of the course, fair processing notice, day’s activities including course timetable, topics to be covered and ground rules Explain and carry out a pre-course prior knowledge review.

  • Showing content appropriate videos as provided by DVSA, Highways England Vulnerable Road Users and FORS safety video

Recording Systems including mode selection and record keeping

  • Show videos, covering digital tachographs. Importance of correct mode selection and record keeping.

  • How to make manual records on both digital and analogue platforms.

  • Discuss tacho calibration and keeping sufficient supplies.

Legal Obligations of driver and operator. Drivers hours, rest periods and the causes of enforcement notices.

  • Covering all aspects in relation to conduct and mitigating the risks of inadvertently assisting in people smuggling and its serious implications.

  • Implications of different driver hours regimes and how they affect day to day work. Impact of the Working Time Regulations in relation to EU driver hours.

  • Discuss impact on drivers and operators of rule breaking.

  • How the Traffic Commissioners view the conduct of professional drivers in respect of breaking the law on mobile hand-held units etc.

  • The effects that diet and alcohol can have on driver performance.

  • Satellite navigation technology and its use in geo-tunnelling.

  • Discuss how efficient driving is beneficial to vehicle, driver and operator.

  • Examples or poor satellite navigation use.

  • Understanding and interpreting traffic signs and restrictions, plus its uniqueness to PCV and LGV drivers.

  • Discussing the meanings of different types of signs.

  • ​Importance of adhering to different types of signs i.e. Height restrictions,
    weight restrictions and width restrictions.

End of Day Routine

  • Correct end of day routine, to cover final walkround checks
    and correct mode selections on tachograph.

Duration

The course is classroom based and taught via Powerpoint Presentation and discussion. It will count as 7 hours towards Driver CPC Training.
